Jammu, April 16, 2026:
In a significant community-driven initiative, religious institutions across Jammu & Kashmir have stepped forward to play a proactive role in curbing the growing menace of drug abuse and associated social crimes. A poster campaign circulating widely ahead of Friday prayers has called upon clerics, scholars, and mosque committees to use their platforms to raise awareness against narcotics and moral degradation.

The campaign emphasizes that drug addiction is not merely an individual problem but a societal crisis that is steadily eroding the moral fabric, particularly impacting the youth. It highlights the urgent need for collective action, urging religious leaders to address the issue during congregational gatherings and guide people towards a healthier and responsible lifestyle.

According to the appeal, Imams and scholars have been requested to deliver special sermons focusing on the harmful effects of drugs, including their social, economic, and health consequences. The initiative also stresses the importance of engaging parents and community elders to monitor and guide the younger generation.

Religious institutions, given their influence and outreach, are being seen as key stakeholders in this movement. By fostering awareness, promoting ethical values, and encouraging community vigilance, they can significantly contribute to reducing drug-related crimes and anti-social activities.

The appeal has been issued under the leadership of Hafiz Abdul Rasheed Ashrafi, Head of Anjuman Ulema Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (Jammu & Kashmir) and Chief of Masajid, who has urged all stakeholders to unite against the menace and work collectively for a drug-free and morally strong society.

Notably, the initiative also aligns with the ongoing anti-drug campaign launched by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, who recently rolled out a comprehensive 100-day action plan to tackle drug abuse and dismantle narcotics networks across the Union Territory. The campaign focuses on intensified enforcement, rehabilitation of affected individuals, public awareness drives, and active community participation, with special emphasis on youth engagement and institutional involvement.

The poster further calls for coordination between religious bodies and authorities to ensure a sustained and effective campaign, underlining that tackling drug abuse requires both strict enforcement and strong moral guidance at the grassroots level.
