Lucknow: The political battle for women voters in Uttar Pradesh is gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government reportedly considering financial assistance of up to ₹50,000 for eligible women.
The proposed initiative could put the BJP ahead of the Samajwadi Party’s welfare pitch, as SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has promised ₹40,000 annually to underprivileged women if his party returns to power.
According to media reports, the Uttar Pradesh government is exploring different ways to provide the proposed assistance, including direct benefit transfers (DBT) into beneficiaries’ bank accounts or expanding existing welfare schemes related to education, healthcare and skill development.
Reports have also suggested a possible payment structure involving an initial instalment of ₹20,000, followed by three instalments of ₹10,000 each. However, the government has not officially finalised the scheme, its eligibility criteria or payment structure.
The political significance of the proposal is considerable. Uttar Pradesh has approximately 6.09 crore registered women voters, accounting for 45.46 per cent of the state’s electorate, making women a crucial constituency in the upcoming elections.
Akhilesh Yadav has criticised the BJP government’s reported proposal while positioning his party’s ₹40,000 annual assistance promise as a major welfare commitment.
With both major political parties increasingly focusing on financial assistance and women-centric welfare programmes, the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are shaping up to be a significant contest for women’s support.
The coming months will reveal whether the BJP government formally announces the proposed scheme or introduces additional measures to strengthen its outreach among women voters.
