Kolkata, November 7: The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata has extended the suspension of academic activities until December 11, 2026, amid continuing student protests and escalating tensions on campus.
The institute’s decision affects regular academic activities in both the Film and Electronic and Digital Media (EDM) wings. Hostel facilities and mess services have also been ordered to remain closed during this period, with students previously directed to vacate the campus premises.
The unrest began on September 27 following an alleged attack on students during an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, an RSS-linked organisation. Tensions escalated further after another alleged incident on October 4 involving members of the Bangiya Hindu Jagran Manch.
Students have been protesting over campus security, alleged attacks, privacy concerns and the administration’s handling of the situation. They have also demanded accountability and the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera.
The controversy has intensified following reports that two contractual faculty members were suspended and the services of several resource persons discontinued. Students have alleged that the administration is taking action against those supporting their protest.
However, the institute administration has defended its decisions, maintaining that the measures are necessary to restore normalcy, maintain campus security and protect academic standards.
The continued closure has raised concerns about students’ academic schedules, access to essential facilities and the future of their ongoing courses.
