The Vice President’s post fell vacant after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, citing health reasons.

“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” Dhankhar stated in his resignation letter.

On Thursday, the Election Commission said it had finalised the Electoral College list for the 2025 Vice Presidential Election.

In a post on X, the commission stated:

“The Commission has finalised the Electoral College list for the Vice Presidential Election, 2025. Members are listed in serial order, arranged alphabetically by the State/UT of their respective Houses. The list will be available for purchase at the Election Commission counter from the date of notification.”

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both Houses of Parliament through a single transferable vote system and secret ballot.

According to constitutional norms, an election to fill a vacancy caused by the expiry of the Vice President’s term must be completed before the term ends. In cases of premature vacancy due to resignation, death, or removal, an election is held as soon as possible, and the elected individual serves a full five-year term from the date of assuming office.  (AGENCIES)
