Four legislators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, Waheed ur Rehman Para, Rafiq Ahmad Naik, and Mir Mohammad Fayaz — on Friday moved a resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly seeking a discussion on the ongoing developments in Iran and expressing solidarity with its people.

The move came shortly after the House was adjourned for 30 minutes following chaotic scenes triggered by slogan-shouting and protests between rival members.

The disruption began when legislators from the National Conference (NC) raised slogans against the US-Israel conflict with Iran and displayed posters of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei inside the Assembly. Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) objected to the display, responding with counter-slogans, which led to heated exchanges and forced the Speaker to briefly adjourn the proceedings.

After the House resumed, PDP legislators formally submitted their request, urging the Speaker to allow a structured discussion on the international issue within the Assembly. The demand is likely to further intensify debate over the propriety of raising foreign policy matters in a state legislature. (Agency)
