Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation into the circulation of fake news falsely claiming that terrorists attacked a police station in Baramulla, opened fire at government offices and that the Chief Minister had proposed cancelling the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
In a statement, Police Baramulla categorically denied the viral claims, calling them completely false, baseless and without any factual basis.
Police clarified that no terrorist attack or firing incident had taken place anywhere in Baramulla and that reports suggesting the proposed cancellation of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra were also entirely false and misleading.
According to the police, the deliberate circulation of fabricated content appears to be a calculated attempt to create fear, spread panic, disturb public tranquillity and undermine public confidence ahead of the annual pilgrimage.
An FIR has been registered, and an investigation has been initiated to identify those responsible for creating, publishing and circulating the fake information.
Police said strict legal action will be taken against all individuals found involved, including those who knowingly forward or share false content with the intention of amplifying misinformation.
The annual Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is scheduled to begin on July 3 and conclude on August 28.
Police have urged the public to avoid sharing unverified information on social media and rely only on official government and police sources for authentic updates.
They warned that the circulation of fake news not only creates unnecessary panic and disrupts public order but also attracts legal consequences under the law.
