Rising prices of maize and broken rice are putting pressure on poultry farmers, with consumers likely to face higher prices of eggs and chicken ahead of December.

Egg and chicken prices across India are expected to increase by 25-30% by December due to a sharp rise in the cost of poultry feed, according to a report by The Economic Times.

The report highlights a significant increase in the prices of key poultry feed ingredients, including maize and broken rice, which have become considerably more expensive compared to last year.

Maize prices, which were around ₹18 per kg last year, have climbed to approximately ₹34 per kg, compared to ₹26-27 per kg just a month ago. Industry sources reportedly believe prices could touch ₹40 per kg by December, partly due to concerns over supply-chain intermediaries hoarding stocks in anticipation of further price increases.

Similarly, broken rice prices have surged from ₹14-15 per kg in November 2025 to around ₹31-32 per kg currently, compared to ₹22-23 per kg just a month ago.

The rising cost of these essential feed ingredients is increasing production expenses for poultry farmers, with the impact expected to reach consumers through higher egg and chicken prices.

If the trend continues, households could face a significant increase in their food expenses in the coming weeks.
