Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Monday described Booth Level Officers (BLOs) as the backbone of India’s electoral democracy, highlighting their vital role in maintaining accurate voter lists and ensuring fair, transparent elections.

During his visit to Budgam in central Kashmir, the CEC interacted with BLOs, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), and other election officials at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The meeting was part of his three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review election preparedness and interact with field-level officials.

Accompanied by Chief Electoral Officer J&K Sanjeev Verma and District Election Officer Athar Amir, the CEC appreciated the dedication of election staff and said BLOs serve as the first point of contact between the Election Commission and voters.

He stressed the importance of keeping electoral rolls accurate through regular verification and updates. He also highlighted the role of technology, including ERO Net, in making voter registration more transparent, efficient, and accessible.

Gyanesh Kumar urged election officials to perform their duties with honesty, impartiality, and commitment. He also advised them to rely on official facts and procedures and not be influenced by misinformation.

The CEC said India’s election system is among the most transparent in the world, with every stage of the electoral process closely monitored to ensure fairness and public trust. (Agencies)
