Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, seeking his intervention to stop the alleged illegal collection of money from livestock transport vehicles passing through Punjab.

In his letter, Omar Abdullah referred to complaints raised by the All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Union, which alleged that livestock-laden vehicles heading to Jammu and Kashmir are being stopped by certain contractor groups and forced to pay unauthorised charges despite carrying all valid permits and required documents.

The Chief Minister said these unnecessary stoppages are causing delays, financial losses to transporters, and affecting the welfare of the animals being transported.

He also cited the findings of an internal committee of the Jammu and Kashmir government, which reportedly found that transporters were being compelled to make large payments per vehicle without any legal basis.

Omar Abdullah pointed out that livestock transport is exempt from GST, and the continued collection of such charges places an additional burden on traders. He warned that the extra cost could ultimately lead to higher meat prices for consumers in Jammu and Kashmir.

Highlighting the strong relationship between Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah expressed confidence that the Punjab government would address the matter and ensure the smooth, safe, and uninterrupted movement of livestock vehicles.

He also urged the Punjab government to ensure that transporters carrying valid documents are not subjected to any unauthorised interference or illegal fee collection. (Agencies)
