Dubai, Apr 04: The Gulf nation of Bahrain, which currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council, has postponed a vote on a resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, diplomats said.

Two UN diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity as consultations remain private, said the vote—originally expected on Saturday—has now been deferred to next week.

The Bahrain-sponsored draft resolution had already been significantly diluted due to opposition from Russia and China. It proposes authorising defensive measures to ensure safe passage of vessels through the key waterway, rather than the stronger action initially backed by Gulf countries and the United States.

Bahrain has been seeking support from all 15 members of the council, and the delay suggests that even the revised draft has yet to gain full acceptance, particularly from Russia and China. (Agency)
