Srinagar, Mar 26: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Tuesday as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) raised the long-pending demand for the regularisation of daily wagers, blaming the government for its lack of response.

As soon as the Question Hour concluded, the LoP stood up and pressed for an official statement on the matter, highlighting the impact of the ongoing strike by daily wagers.

“The daily wagers’ strike has led to a water crisis, yet the government’s lack of response is unfortunate,” the LoP stated, adding that he had raised the issue in the House the previous day, but no action had been taken.

The demand led to a heated exchange, with Deputy Chief Minister accusing BJP MLAs of deliberately orchestrating protests to gain media attention. The remarks sparked an argument between treasury and opposition benches, further intensifying the chaos.

Amid the ruckus, Minister Satish Sharma condemned the reported use of force against daily wagers, clarifying that the police function under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and that the government sympathized with the protesters.

In an effort to calm the agitating MLAs, the Speaker reminded the House that a special committee had already been constituted to address the concerns of daily wagers and would soon review the matter.

The session ended with continued opposition protests, as the government reiterated its commitment to finding a resolution.
