Early Warning Systems Key to Disaster Mitigation, Say Experts on World Meteorological Day
Srinagar, Mar 23: Experts have emphasized the critical role of early warning systems in mitigating the impact of natural disasters, stressing that timely alerts can help communities prepare and respond effectively.
Marking World Meteorological Day 2025, the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), Srinagar Chapter, hosted a hybrid seminar, bringing together leading researchers and professionals to discuss advancements in meteorology, disaster preparedness, and climate resilience.
Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of IUST and Chairman of IMS Srinagar Chapter, highlighted the region’s growing vulnerability to climate-related disasters. He underscored the need to leverage scientific advancements to reduce risks.
“Timely warnings and accurate forecasting can significantly reduce loss of life and property during extreme weather events,” Prof. Romshoo said, adding that robust early warning systems are the first line of defense against natural calamities.
Dr. Mukhtar, Director of Meteorological Department (MeT) Srinagar, noted that cutting-edge research and technology are transforming weather forecasting and climate monitoring. He emphasized the importance of IMD Srinagar’s state-of-the-art facilities, which enable accurate and timely weather predictions crucial for disaster management.
“Accurate weather data helps communities better cope with extreme weather events, minimizing losses,” Dr. Mukhtar said, calling for greater collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and local authorities to ensure effective implementation of meteorological research.
The event also featured key contributions from:
- Dr. Tariq Abdullah, HoD Geomatics and Planning, IUST, who delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the role of meteorological research in disaster risk reduction.
- Dr. Sumira Nazir Zaz, Coordinator, Department of Environment, Sustainability, and Climate Change, IUST, who delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of speakers and participants.
- Dr. Yasir Altaf, Assistant Professor at IUST, who anchored the session as an executive member of IMS Srinagar Chapter.
The seminar concluded with discussions on integrating advanced meteorological tools with disaster management strategies to enhance climate resilience and community preparedness.
