National Conference MLA and Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq on Thursday said that while the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Jammu and Kashmir is welcome, it should also serve as an opportunity to fulfil the long-pending promise of restoring statehood to the Union Territory.

Talking to media persons, as reported by news agency, Tanvir Sadiq said that the Home Minister’s visit should go beyond formality. “The Home Minister is visiting Jammu and Kashmir, and that is welcome. However, I want to remind him of the assurance given in Parliament regarding the restoration of statehood. This is the right time to honour that commitment,” he said.

Tanvir Sadiq also expressed concern over the rising incidents of attacks on Kashmiris outside Jammu and Kashmir, saying the issue can no longer be overlooked. “Kashmiris are being targeted outside the region, and this must stop. The Home Minister should take this matter very seriously,” he added.

Commenting on the killing of terrorists in the Jammu province, he said the situation remains worrying despite the efforts of security forces. “It is reassuring that the Army and paramilitary forces are performing their duties effectively. At the same time, it is deeply concerning because these areas were once considered free from terrorism,” he said.

He further said that the re-emergence of such incidents calls for serious introspection. “Why is this happening again? Why is there a resurgence of terrorism in these areas? This needs to be thoroughly examined,” Tanvir Sadiq said. (Agency)
