Famous for its rich iron ore deposits, Jabalpur has now grabbed attention for a much more dazzling reason. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has confirmed the discovery of a significant gold reserve in the Mahgawan Keolari area of Sihora tehsil — a find that could transform the region’s economic and mining profile.

According to a report by Media the breakthrough came after an extensive exploration programme involving soil sampling and chemical analysis. In addition to the district’s well-known iron and manganese ore deposits, geologists have identified gold and copper reserves spread over nearly 100 hectares.

Preliminary estimates suggest that the gold reserves could run into lakhs of tonnes, potentially placing Jabalpur among India’s most mineral-rich districts. “The evidence is conclusive,” a senior department official stated. “Chemical tests have confirmed significant traces of gold, along with copper and other valuable minerals. This could be one of the most important mineral discoveries in central India in recent years.”

The discovery adds a valuable boost to Madhya Pradesh’s mining portfolio, which has witnessed significant growth in recent years. A similar gold find in the neighbouring Katni district had earlier attracted strong interest from both public and private mining firms.

Experts believe the Jabalpur reserve could draw substantial investment in extraction and processing facilities, creating jobs and driving regional revenue. The presence of copper and other metals further increases the site’s commercial appeal, paving the way for integrated mineral development.

With GSI’s confirmation now in place, the focus will shift to detailed feasibility studies, securing environmental clearances, and forging potential partnerships between state authorities and private sector investors eager to tap into what could be one of central India’s most promising mining ventures of the decade.  (Agencies)
