Jammu, February 26, 2026:
Amid strong resentment and widespread objections from the teaching fraternity and teacher aspirants, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has kept in abeyance its recent order designating the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education / State School Standards Authority (SSSA) as the nodal agency for conducting the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET).

As per Government Order No. 87-JK (Edu) of 2026, dated February 26, 2026, the School Education Department has withheld Government Order No. 82-JK (Edu) of 2026, issued on February 23, 2026, till further orders. Official sources clarified that the decision was taken as an administrative measure following serious concerns raised by teachers and aspirants over the legality, transparency and preparedness related to the conduct of TET.

While the order makes a reference to a judgment dated September 1, 2025, passed by the Supreme Court of India in Civil Appeal No. 1385/2025 and connected matters titled Anjuman Ishat-E-Taleem Trust vs State of Maharashtra & Others, officials made it clear that there was no direct judicial direction to suspend the order. The abeyance has been effected purely on administrative grounds after the backlash from the teaching community.

Sources further said that the Supreme Court judgment has been cited only as a legal reference point for future examination of the issue, and not as the immediate cause for withholding the order. The government has decided to re-examine the entire matter in the light of stakeholders’ objections, existing legal provisions, and administrative feasibility before taking any further decision.

The term “kept in abeyance” implies that the order has been temporarily suspended and not cancelled. Consequently, the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education / SSSA will not act as the nodal agency for conducting TET until further directions are issued by the government.

Officials also clarified that the move will not have any immediate adverse impact on the eligibility status of teachers or aspirants, and that any future decision regarding the conduct of TET will be taken strictly in accordance with law and after due consultation to ensure transparency and uniformity.

The order has been circulated to all concerned departments and authorities for information and compliance.
