SIT Formed to Probe Failed Assassination Attempt on Farooq Abdullah in Jammu

Jammu, March 14: The Jammu and Kashmir Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the failed assassination attempt on former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Farooq Abdullah.

According to official sources, the incident took place on March 11 when Abdullah was attending a wedding function at Royal Park Banquet Hall. At around 10:10 PM, while the veteran leader was leaving the venue, an individual allegedly flashed a revolver and attempted to open fire from close range. The attempt was foiled due to the swift action of security personnel deployed with him, preventing any harm.

Following the incident, FIR No. 29/2026 was registered at Police Station Gangyal under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.

 

Considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the case, an SIT has been constituted under the supervision of the DIG JSK Range Shiv Kumar Sharma. The team comprises Sanjay Sharma, SSP (SO to DIG JSK Range); Irshad Hussain Rather, SP Headquarters Jammu; Arvind Kumar Sambyal, DySP RPHQ Jammu; Inspector Saroop Singh (RPHQ Jammu); Inspector Paramjeet Singh (District Jammu); Inspector Sanjeev Chib, SHO Gangyal; and Inspector Shariq Majeed (District Jammu).

 

The order constituting the SIT was issued by Bhim Sen Tuti, Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, directing the team to conduct a thorough investigation and complete the probe within the statutory timeframe.

 

The incident has triggered political reactions across the region, with several leaders condemning the attack and expressing concern over the security of senior political figures. Leaders from various political parties demanded a fair and time-bound investigation and urged authorities to ensure adequate security for public representatives.
