Lucknow Prepares for Ramadan 2026 as Moon Sighting Expected Today

LUCKNOW: Mosques across Lucknow are gearing up for Tarawih (night prayers) as the crescent moon marking the start of Ramadan 2026 is expected to be sighted on Wednesday. The Sunni and Shia Markazi Chand Committees are scheduled to make a formal announcement in the evening. If the moon is confirmed, the first Roza (fast) will be observed on Thursday, February 19.

Religious scholars and members of the Markazi Chand Committee will make the final decision after sunset, following the official moon sighting.

Maulana Khalid Rasheed, president of the Markazi Chand Committee, said, “The moon for the holy month of Ramzan will likely be sighted on Wednesday, and most probably the first Roza will be observed on Thursday in India. We urge everyone to help the needy and give charity in this holy month. As in previous years, separate arrangements have been made for men and women for Tarawih prayers at Jama Masjid Aishbagh Eidgah.”

The Markazi Shia Chand Committee has also requested devotees to look for the crescent and report any confirmed sightings. Maulana Saif Abbas Naqvi, president of the committee, appealed to community members to inform the panel if the moon is visible.

Thousands of worshippers are expected to attend Tarawih prayers at various mosques, with special facilities arranged for women at Jama Masjid Aishbagh Eidgah. Separate spaces have been created inside the hall to accommodate female worshippers.

Clerics recently met with district administration officials, police, and municipal teams to ensure smooth conduct of prayers during Ramadan. Security, sanitation, and other logistical arrangements are being coordinated ahead of the holy month. (Agency)
