New Delhi, October 3: Priyanka Kakkar, a long-time Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and its national chief spokesperson, has joined the Indian National Congress, marking a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Kakkar joined AAP in 2013 and was appointed its national chief spokesperson in 2023.

After joining Congress, Kakkar criticised what she described as a departure from AAP’s early emphasis on simplicity and opposition to political luxury. She also expressed support for Rahul Gandhi and his campaign against what he has termed “vote theft.”

Her move comes at a time when Congress is reorganising its Punjab unit ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls. The party has recently appointed former hockey Olympian Pargat Singh as Punjab Congress president, replacing Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

Kakkar’s earlier public criticism of Rahul Gandhi has also drawn attention following her decision to join Congress. Her latest statements indicate a significant change in her political positioning, as she now calls for support behind the Congress leadership.

Congress leaders welcomed her into the party, highlighting her experience as a national-level spokesperson and political communicator.
