Committee reviews urban infrastructure, lauds Srinagar Smart City works and stresses sustainable civic development

SRINAGAR, MAY 11: A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs on Sunday reviewed ongoing Smart City and urban development projects during a detailed study visit to Srinagar.

The visit formed part of the Committee’s programme for 2025–26 aimed at assessing the implementation and progress of key urban development initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the inspection, members of the Committee were briefed on projects related to urban infrastructure, housing, sanitation, municipal services, and civic amenities. The discussions focused on strengthening urban governance and ensuring effective execution of flagship government programmes.

The Committee conducted field visits to several major sites, including the Jhelum Riverfront, Lal Chowk Public Square, and Balidan Stambh, where they reviewed development and beautification works undertaken under the Smart City initiative.

Chief Executive Officer of Srinagar Smart City Limited Srinagar Smart City Limited, Faz Lul Haseeb, briefed the members about various ongoing projects aimed at improving public spaces, enhancing pedestrian infrastructure, strengthening urban mobility, and upgrading civic services across Srinagar.

Members of the Committee appreciated the progress achieved under the Smart City programme and stressed the need for sustainable, inclusive, and citizen-friendly urban development. They also highlighted the importance of further improving public amenities and civic infrastructure in the city.

The visit provided the Committee with first-hand insight into Srinagar’s ongoing transformation under urban development initiatives and is expected to contribute to future policy recommendations for strengthening governance and infrastructure in the region.
