The demand for establishing a National Law University (NLU) in Jammu reverberated in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, with BJP MLAs staging protests over the issue.
As soon as the Question Hour commenced, BJP legislators stood up and raised slogans, demanding the setting up of a Law University in Jammu, news agency Kashmir News Observer (Agencies) reported.
“The students are on the streets in Jammu demanding a National Law University. There is widespread anguish among the people. We are not opposed to the establishment of the Law University, but it should also be set up in Jammu,” BJP MLA Surjit Singh Slathia said.
Other BJP MLAs supported the demand and were seen holding placards inside the House.
However, Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat objected to the display of placards, stating that it violated the decorum of the Assembly.
Peoples Conference MLA Sajad Lone mocked the BJP legislators, pointing out that the proposed NLU is a state university and not a central one.
“It has a budget of merely ₹50 crore,” Lone remarked.
Meanwhile, the issue of alleged harassment of Kashmiris was also raised in the House by National Conference MLA Mubarak Gul and PDP legislator Waheed Parra, Agencies reported.
