Srinagar, June 17: National Conference Member of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmad on Wednesday reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its proposed protest in New Delhi over the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the demonstration will go ahead as planned after July 15.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mian Altaf said the National Conference considers it its responsibility to raise the issue of statehood and remind the Centre of its commitments regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
“Even yesterday, the Chief Minister said the protest will be held at its scheduled time. It is our duty to protest on this issue, and we are performing that duty. This is a positive step,” he said.
The National Conference has announced plans to hold a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, seeking the restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees for Jammu and Kashmir. The party has consistently maintained that the move is aimed at reminding the Centre of assurances made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
On the sidelines of a book launch event, Mian Altaf also spoke about the importance of democratic values and secularism, describing them as India’s greatest strengths on the global stage. However, he expressed concern that these principles were facing challenges within the country.
“Democracy and secularism are India’s strengths and have earned the country respect worldwide. It is unfortunate that these values appear to be weakening within our own nation,” he remarked, while also referring to concerns regarding justice and media freedom.
Commenting on the upcoming Amarnath Yatra and Muharram observances, the National Conference MP expressed confidence that both events would be conducted peacefully and successfully.
“This is a blessed month, and today marks the beginning of Muharram. God willing, all programmes will be held smoothly and peacefully,” he said.
Mian Altaf added that the administration would ensure proper arrangements for pilgrims and participants, while emphasizing Kashmir’s long-standing tradition of hospitality towards Amarnath Yatra devotees.
“Kashmiris have always welcomed and served Amarnath pilgrims with warmth and respect. We hope this tradition continues and that the Yatra is completed successfully and safely this year as well,” he said.
The senior NC leader reiterated that the party would continue to raise issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir’s political rights while supporting peace, communal harmony, and democratic values across the region.
