Mehbooba Mufti Visits Iranian Embassy in Delhi, Pays Tribute to Ayatollah Khamenei; Raises Issue of Kashmiri Students in Iran

Jammu New Delhi, March 9, 2026: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Monday visited the Iranian Cultural Centre and the Embassy of the Iran in New Delhi to express condolences over the demise of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

During her visit, Mufti conveyed her sympathies with the people and leadership of Iran and paid tribute to Ayatollah Khamenei, describing his death as a significant loss for the country and the wider region.

Taking to social media after the visit, Mehbooba Mufti said that she had visited the Iranian Cultural Centre and Embassy to offer her “deepest condolences to the people of Iran in these difficult times” and paid tributes to Ayatollah Khamenei on his martyrdom.

She also used the occasion to raise concerns about the safety and well-being of Kashmiri students currently stranded in Iran amid the ongoing regional tensions. Mufti said she discussed the matter with the Iranian Ambassador in New Delhi and sought necessary assistance to ensure the students’ safety and facilitate support for them during the crisis.

According to sources, Mufti highlighted the anxiety among families in Jammu and Kashmir whose children are studying in various Iranian universities and requested the diplomatic mission to extend all possible cooperation until the situation stabilizes.

The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi has reportedly opened a condolence register where diplomats, political leaders and members of the public are visiting to pay their respects to the late Iranian leader.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who served as the Supreme Leader of Iran for decades, remained one of the most influential figures in the country’s political and religious establishment. His death has drawn reactions and condolences from political leaders and governments across the region.

Mufti’s visit comes at a time when concerns are being expressed in Jammu and Kashmir over the safety of students studying abroad, particularly in regions witnessing heightened geopolitical tensions.

Families of several students from Kashmir studying in Iran have urged the Government of India to closely monitor the situation and take steps to ensure their safety if the security situation deteriorates further.
