Jammu/, April 1, 2026: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the government over the introduction of a private member’s bill seeking amendments to the Land Grants Act, terming the move as “deeply unfortunate” and a “betrayal of public trust.”

Reacting to the bill moved by Tanvir Sadiq and admitted in the J&K Assembly, Sharma alleged that the mandate given by the people to the ruling National Conference was being misused to protect elite interests rather than serve the common masses.

He said many voters had supported the party with the belief that it would fight for public rights, but the recent developments suggest otherwise. “The government appears to be facilitating influential circles, including those linked to high-value properties like Nedous and other elite beneficiaries,” Sharma remarked.

The LoP expressed concern that the proposed amendments could pave the way for re-leasing large portions of government land at nominal rates, continuing what he described as a long-standing pattern of favoring privileged groups.

“What message does this send to the common citizen?” he questioned, adding that instead of safeguarding public assets and ensuring justice for marginalized sections, the government seemed to be enabling those who have historically benefited at the expense of the poor.

Calling the development “not just disappointing but a betrayal,” Sharma urged the government to reconsider its approach and uphold transparency and fairness in matters concerning public land.

The bill has sparked a political debate, with opposition parties demanding greater scrutiny and clarity on its long-term implications.
