Leh, November 4: The Ladakh Union Territory administration has directed the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL), founded by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, to refrain from commencing classes and other activities at a school located within its campus until a pending land dispute is decided by the High Court.

According to the directive, HIAL has been asked not to initiate academic or other institutional activities at the school premises while the legal dispute over the land remains unresolved.

The matter is currently pending before the High Court, and the administration’s decision effectively puts the proposed commencement of school activities on hold until a judicial determination is reached.

HIAL, established by Sonam Wangchuk, is known for its work in alternative education, sustainable development and climate-focused initiatives in the Himalayan region.

The development comes amid continuing legal and administrative issues surrounding the institution’s land in Leh. The future of the proposed school activities will depend on the outcome of the ongoing court proceedings.

The matter has brought renewed attention to the land dispute involving HIAL and the Ladakh administration.
