Amman, October 26: Jordanian security forces have arrested three men suspected of carrying out a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, southern Jordan, that killed nine people and injured dozens of others.
According to officials, the arrests were made early Monday following a shootout in which all three suspects were wounded. Security forces located the men hiding inside an abandoned house after an intensive search operation. No security personnel were injured during the operation.
The attack took place on Friday during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, in Karak Governorate, around 120 kilometres southwest of the capital, Amman. Gunmen reportedly opened fire during the gathering, killing nine people and injuring around 40 others, according to Reuters.
Jordanian authorities have described the attack as an act of extremism. However, no group has claimed responsibility, and officials have not publicly established any links between the suspects and a specific militant organisation.
King Abdullah II has called for a firm response against those responsible for the attack as investigations continue.
The arrests come amid heightened security measures following the deadly assault, which targeted members of Jordan’s Christian minority.
