Kishtwar: Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated India’s 183rd Seismological Observatory in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, marking another step towards strengthening the country’s earthquake monitoring and scientific observation network.

The newly inaugurated observatory is expected to enhance the monitoring of seismic activities in the region and provide important data related to earthquakes and ground movements. The facility will help scientists observe seismic events more effectively and improve the collection of earthquake-related information.

Kishtwar and adjoining areas of Jammu and Kashmir fall within a seismically active Himalayan region, making earthquake monitoring particularly important for understanding geological activities and assessing potential risks.

The establishment of the observatory is aimed at strengthening scientific infrastructure and improving the availability of real-time seismic information. Such facilities play an important role in earthquake research, geological studies and disaster preparedness.

The inauguration also highlights the growing focus on expanding India’s scientific monitoring infrastructure, particularly in regions that require continuous observation due to their geographical and geological conditions.

With the addition of the Kishtwar facility, India’s seismological network has reached 183 observatories, further expanding the country’s capacity to monitor seismic activity and support scientific research.
