Budgam, May 08: International Red Cross Day was today celebrated at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hall Budgam by the District Administration Budgam in collaboration with the District Red Cross Society and Chief Medical Officer Budgam.
The day-long programme was inaugurated by Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Budgam Vivek Agarwal, who attended as the chief guest on the occasion.
A blood donation camp was also organised during the event, in which several voluntary donors participated with enthusiasm. Students from various educational institutions attended the programme and were sensitised about the importance of voluntary blood donation and the humanitarian significance of International Red Cross Day.
Speaking on the occasion, the ADDC appreciated the role of Red Cross Societies for their exemplary services during the COVID-19 pandemic and other natural calamities. He emphasized that service to society requires both physical and mental well-being and urged students to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
He also highlighted the growing concern of drug abuse and advised students to stay away from such social evils.
Chief Medical Officer Budgam Dr. Gulzar Ahmad and other speakers discussed the importance of voluntary blood donation and active community participation in humanitarian efforts.
A special highlight of the event was the participation of renowned blood donors Shabir Ahmad Khan, who has donated 193 units of blood, and Bilqees Ara, who has donated 43 units. Both shared their experiences and motivated participants to contribute towards saving lives.
Students also spoke on the significance of International Red Cross Day and underlined the importance of humanitarian values in society.
Officials from SDRF, health department, volunteers, and members of civil society were also present on the occasion.
