Indian Embassy urges citizens to stay indoors in Mexico after killing of cartel kingpin El Mencho
MEXICO CITY, Feb 23: The Embassy of India in Mexico has issued a high-alert advisory for Indian nationals after Mexican security forces killed notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, triggering violence and road blockades in several regions.
Oseguera, widely known as El Mencho and head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed on Sunday during a military operation in the western state of Jalisco, according to federal officials. He was among the most wanted drug lords in both Mexico and the United States.
Following the operation, the Indian mission advised nationals in Jalisco (including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas (Reynosa and nearby municipalities), as well as parts of Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo León, to shelter in place until further notice.
“Avoid areas around law enforcement activity. Be aware of your surroundings. Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movement. Monitor local media for updates and follow directions of local authorities. In case of emergency, call 911,” the embassy posted on X.
The advisory comes amid heightened security operations and reports of criminal activity across affected states. (Agencies)
