Ladakh, November 7: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a major milestone in military aviation after its Russian-origin IL-76MD heavy transport aircraft successfully landed at the strategically important Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh.
Located at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet, Nyoma airbase is among India’s strategically significant military facilities, situated around 25 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
According to the Indian Air Force, the successful landing marks the highest-altitude landing ever achieved by an IL-76MD aircraft anywhere in the world.
The IAF described the achievement as a demonstration of the aircraft’s operational capabilities and the exceptional flying skills, precision and professionalism of its crew.
The milestone is also significant for India’s strategic airlift capabilities, particularly in the challenging high-altitude terrain of eastern Ladakh. The ability to operate heavy transport aircraft in such conditions can strengthen logistical support and the movement of personnel and equipment in forward areas.
The successful landing highlights the Indian Air Force’s continued efforts to enhance operational readiness and strengthen military infrastructure along India’s northern borders.
