Omar Abdullah Reaffirms Commitment to 200 Units of Free Electricity for AAY Households

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reiterated his government’s commitment to fulfilling its manifesto promises, including providing 200 units of free electricity to eligible households.

Addressing concerns raised by legislators during the ongoing Budget Session in the J&K Legislative Assembly, Abdullah assured that the initiative would be rolled out systematically, starting with the poorest and most deserving families under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY).

“We are committed to delivering on our promises. As a first step, we will prioritize the most vulnerable households,” said Abdullah, adding that the scheme would expand gradually after evaluating its impact.

He also urged critics to wait for its official rollout before making judgments. “Let us start the process. If any issues arise, we will reassess and refine it accordingly,” he said.

To address concerns about electricity bills and arrears, Abdullah highlighted the government’s Amnesty Scheme, which waives interest and surcharge components on outstanding bills. The administration also plans to implement the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model to install solar rooftop systems for AAY households, particularly in hilly areas, to reduce transmission costs.

Regarding electricity tariffs, the CM noted that J&K already offers highly subsidized rates, with domestic consumers paying ₹2.30 to ₹4.35 per unit, among the lowest in India. BPL households pay as little as ₹1.40 per unit for up to 30 units per month.

The government is also working on local solar energy generation to cut distribution costs, and targeted beneficiary surveys are underway to ensure the initiative’s financial viability and long-term sustainability.
