Jammu, November 5: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday encouraged students to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, while cautioning them against using such tools to avoid genuine learning, complete homework through shortcuts or compromise their independent thinking.

Addressing the annual Honour and Excellence Awards ceremony at the Convention Centre in Jammu, the Chief Minister said education should not be limited to examination results and academic achievements but must also develop independent thinking, moral values, curiosity and a sense of responsibility among students.

Sharing his own experience with technology, Omar Abdullah revealed that he sometimes uses AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Gemini, while preparing speeches.

However, he cautioned students against misusing AI tools for cheating or outsourcing their homework and assignments, stressing that technology should assist the learning process rather than replace it.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the growing influence of social media and digital platforms, noting that today’s students face challenges and distractions that previous generations did not encounter.

He encouraged students to ask questions without hesitation and develop the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, observing that curiosity and independent thinking are essential for meaningful education.

During the ceremony, Omar Abdullah felicitated meritorious students, including those who secured more than 99 per cent marks, and honoured employees for completing 25 years of service.

Reiterating the importance of questioning and learning, he told students that they should never hesitate to raise questions, emphasising that curiosity is an essential part of education.

The Chief Minister’s remarks underline the growing importance of responsible AI adoption in education, with technology serving as a learning aid rather than a substitute for students’ own efforts and understanding.
