At least 12 workers were killed and four others went missing after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed over the Yellow River in China, state media reported.
Aerial images released by Xinhua showed a massive portion of the bridge’s aquamarine arch missing, while a twisted section of the deck dangled into the river below.
Sixteen workers were present on the bridge in northwest China’s Qinghai province when a steel cable snapped around 3 am on Friday during a tensioning operation, Xinhua reported.
Rescue efforts are underway with the deployment of boats, a helicopter, and robots to trace the missing workers.
According to China Daily, the bridge spans 1.6 kilometres, with its deck rising 55 metres above the river’s surface.
