Bangkok, September 26: Authorities in Bangkok on Saturday declared a flood disaster across all 50 districts of Thailand’s capital after nearly 300 mm of rain caused widespread flooding, submerged roads and severely disrupted traffic.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt urged residents to remain at home where possible as canals reached critical levels and floodwaters spread across several parts of the city. Authorities have opened temporary shelters, deployed pumps and prepared sandbags to assist affected communities.
The Thai Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue through September 27, raising the possibility of further flash floods, waterlogging and overflowing waterways in Bangkok and surrounding areas.
Residents have been advised to move vehicles and belongings to higher ground and avoid flooded roads. Around 980 people were reported to be staying in temporary shelters, while vulnerable residents, including bedridden patients, were being assisted by authorities.
The worsening situation has also prompted travel warnings, with officials urging commuters and visitors to monitor local conditions and avoid unnecessary travel through flooded routes. Major roads in parts of Bangkok have been submerged, causing significant traffic disruption.
