United Nations, Apr 07: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed concern over recent remarks by US President Donald Trump threatening potential strikes on Iran’s energy and civilian infrastructure, his spokesperson said.

“We were alarmed by the rhetoric in the social media post that threatened attacks on power plants, bridges and other infrastructure if Iran does not agree to a deal,” UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said during a press briefing.

The warning was linked to tensions over reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

Dujarric reiterated that the UN chief has consistently stressed adherence to international law, noting that civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities, should not be targeted. He cautioned that even if such sites are considered military objectives, attacks causing excessive civilian harm would violate international humanitarian law.

He added that any such strikes would amount to clear violations of international law, while the determination of war crimes would be left to judicial authorities.

Reaffirming the UN’s stance, Guterres urged all parties to de-escalate and resolve differences through dialogue, stating there is no alternative to peaceful settlement of disputes.

He also warned that the ongoing conflict risks expanding into a wider regional war, with serious global economic and humanitarian consequences. (Agency)
