Jalandhar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has launched a sharp attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab over the state’s drug crisis during the BJP’s anti-drug campaign.
Shah accused the AAP government of allowing the illegal drug trade to operate openly in Punjab and questioned its handling of the narcotics problem. The remarks come as the BJP has made drug eradication a major focus of its political campaign ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
The BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, launched earlier this month, is covering the state before culminating in Jalandhar, where Shah is scheduled to address the campaign. The AAP has rejected the BJP’s campaign as politically motivated and has highlighted its own anti-drug crackdown, including arrests and seizures under the ‘Yudh Nasheyan Virudh’ campaign.
The exchange has put Punjab’s long-running drug problem at the centre of the political debate ahead of the next Assembly election.
