The Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday issued a detailed official press note announcing the registration of a disproportionate assets case against Vijay Singh Choudhary, Inspector, J&K Police, following the conclusion of a verification conducted on specific inputs regarding alleged accumulation of wealth beyond known sources of income.

According to the press note, the verification revealed that Vijay Singh Choudhary, son of Jia Lal Choudhary and a resident of Nonial, Nowshera in Rajouri district, presently posted in the Union Territory of Ladakh, had allegedly raised assets amounting to crores of rupees while serving at different places. The ACB stated that the assets identified during the verification include more than ten immovable properties in the shape of residential houses, shops and nearly 100 kanals of land. The properties, as per the bureau, were mostly acquired in the names of his family members, relatives and other associates and were found prima facie disproportionate to his known lawful income.

The press note further stated that on the basis of material gathered during the verification, a prima facie case of criminal misconduct under Section 13(1)(b) read with Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, was established. Accordingly, FIR No. 02/2026 was registered at Police Station ACB Central and investigation was initiated.

During the course of investigation, the ACB obtained search warrants from the Court of Special Judge Anti-Corruption Jammu and conducted searches at multiple locations linked to the accused officer. These included his residential house at Santokh Vihar, Kaluchak in Jammu, his ancestral residence at Nonial in Nowshera, Rajouri, and business establishments including a stone crusher and tile factory at Tutte Di Khui, Bajalta, Jammu. The bureau stated that further searches were also carried out at additional locations in Jammu under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita based on disclosures made during investigation.

As per the official statement, incriminating documents and records were recovered and seized during the searches. The ACB said that scrutiny of the seized material and financial analysis are underway and that further investigation is in progress to determine the full extent of alleged disproportionate assets and financial transactions.

The development has assumed political significance as the accused Inspector is the brother of the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Surinder Kumar Choudhary. Responding to the ACB action, Surinder Kumar Choudhary termed the raids politically motivated and alleged that the case was aimed at undermining the credibility of an officer who had spent a substantial part of his career fighting terrorism in challenging operational conditions. He asserted that his brother had served with distinction during peak militancy years and maintained that the family has full faith in the judiciary and due process of law.

While the Deputy Chief Minister questioned the timing and intent behind the action, ACB officials reiterated in the press note that the case is evidence-based and that due legal procedure was followed at every stage. The bureau emphasized that the investigation pertains strictly to allegations under the Prevention of Corruption Act and that no individual is above the law.

With the investigation ongoing and seized documents under examination, further developments in the case are awaited.
