The Mexican army on Sunday killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, better known as “El Mencho”, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He had long been considered one of Mexico’s most wanted drug lords, and his death marks a significant development in the government’s campaign against organised crime.

The operation is being viewed as a major achievement for Mexican authorities amid ongoing pressure to curb cartel violence. However, El Mencho’s killing reportedly triggered a strong reaction from CJNG, drawing attention to his close associates and family members who could potentially step into leadership roles.

El Mencho was married to Rosalinda González Valencia, whose relatives are linked to Los Cuinis, an organisation believed to manage the cartel’s financial operations. The couple married in 1996 and were reportedly legally separated in 2018.

They had three children: Rubén Oseguera González, known as “El Menchito”; Jessica Johanna Oseguera González; and Laisha Oseguera.

Who is Jessica Johanna Oseguera?

Jessica Johanna Oseguera González, 39, is the daughter of the slain cartel leader and is a US citizen.

In 2021, she was sentenced in the United States to 30 months in prison for willfully engaging in financial transactions with Mexican companies that had been designated as narcotics trafficking entities. Her case drew attention due to her family’s prominent role in the cartel’s operations.

A press release from the US Department of Justice at the time revealed that Jessica is a United States citizen. She, in fact, holds dual citizenship of the US and Mexico.
