The dispute has now moved into the courts. CNN, MS NOW and Politico have filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that the restrictions violate their First Amendment rights. The White House, meanwhile, maintains that access to the White House is a privilege rather than a constitutional right.
The confrontation has also intensified a broader debate over press access, media independence and the limits of presidential control over White House coverage. The case is expected to test how far the administration can go in restricting journalists from covering the president.
