Under the reported requirements, messaging services will have to remain linked to the active SIM card associated with a user’s registered mobile number. Platforms are reportedly expected to complete the implementation process by December 31, 2026.

The mandate aims to strengthen digital security and curb cyber fraud, phishing attempts and impersonation scams by making it more difficult to misuse messaging accounts linked to mobile numbers.

The new requirement could affect users who access WhatsApp and Telegram on devices that do not contain the SIM card associated with their registered number. Users who rely on linked devices, including computers and secondary phones, may need to check how the rules will apply to their usage.

However, international roaming is reportedly expected to remain unaffected, provided the associated SIM card stays in the handset.

The reported changes could have implications for people who use messaging applications across multiple devices or keep their primary SIM in a different phone. Further implementation details and platform-specific instructions will be important for users ahead of the proposed deadline.

Users are advised to follow official announcements from the Department of Telecommunications and the messaging platforms for confirmed requirements and practical guidance.
