Srinagar: Social-media posts are circulating claims that Lieutenant General Balbir Singh, commander of the Army’s Srinagar-based XV Corps (Chinar Corps), died by suicide on October 1, 2026, following controversy over a recent counter-terrorism operation in Budgam. There is no credible official confirmation of his death or suicide in the sources reviewed.

The controversy follows the September 29–30 operation in which Indian authorities said security forces killed Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Musa, alias Asif Fauji, in Gurwatkalan, Budgam. The Union Home Ministry described the operation as part of “Operation Sheruwali” and said Musa was the last member of a four-person LeT commander group operating in J&K since 2022.

Pakistan’s military subsequently disputed the identification. During a press conference on October 1, Pakistan’s military spokesperson presented a man identified as Mohammad Asif, a former Pakistan Army soldier, who said he was alive and had retired from service in 2023. Pakistan alleged that India had wrongly identified him as the militant killed in the operation; those allegations were not independently established in the reports reviewed.

Separately, a viral document claiming that Lt Gen Balbir Singh had been removed from command was examined by iVerify Pakistan and found to be fake. The fact-check cited discrepancies in the document, including an incorrect service number for Singh and an apparently fabricated replacement officer.

Lt Gen Balbir Singh had assumed command of XV Corps in May 2026. Available reporting confirms his appointment, but the sources reviewed do not substantiate the social-media claim that he died by suicide or resigned.
