Apex Court Rules That Religious Conversion Alone Cannot Entitle Individuals to Backward Class Reservation Benefits

New Delhi, October 15: The Supreme Court of India has upheld the Madras High Court’s decision quashing a Tamil Nadu government notification that extended backward class reservation benefits to certain Hindu backward community members who converted to Islam.

The apex court observed that a person belonging to a Hindu backward community cannot automatically claim the same reservation benefits as a member of a Muslim backward class merely by converting to Islam.

The court held that the Tamil Nadu government’s notification effectively created an “artificial group” of individuals who could access reservation benefits associated with socially and educationally backward communities without independently establishing their eligibility.

The ruling highlights that religious conversion alone cannot serve as a basis for claiming reservation benefits available to a particular backward class.

The judgment reinforces the principle that reservation eligibility must be determined according to legally recognised backward class classifications and applicable constitutional requirements.

The decision has significant implications for reservation policies involving religious converts and the classification of backward communities in Tamil Nadu.
