New Delhi, Feb 23: Tension gripped the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after student groups aligned with Left and Right organisations accused each other of violence during a protest march in the early hours of Monday.

According to students, the incident occurred around 1.30 am when a scuffle reportedly escalated into stone-pelting, leaving several students injured.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) had called for a “Samta Juloos” towards the East Gate, demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit and the revocation of a rustication order. Protesters alleged that the university administration did not engage with the march and instead allowed members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) to confront them.

ABVP, however, denied the allegations and accused Left-backed groups of provoking the clashes and spreading misinformation about the incident.

Left-affiliated organisations, including the All India Students’ Association (AISA), alleged that ABVP activists pelted stones at the JNUSU encampment and attacked “unarmed students,” resulting in multiple injuries.

Videos circulated by students on social media showed scenes of chaos and panic near the protest site, as rival groups clashed during the standoff.

University authorities did not immediately respond to queries. Students said the situation on campus remained tense. (Agency)
