Roofs Uprooted, Trees Downed, and Vehicles Damaged in Severe Windstorm
Strong Winds Wreak Havoc Across Kashmir, Causing Widespread Damage
Powerful winds swept through Kashmir from Thursday night into Friday, leaving a trail of destruction across the region. Trees were uprooted, rooftops were blown away, and houses, vehicles, and infrastructure sustained significant damage.
In Srinagar, several vehicles parked at the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) were damaged due to gusty winds. Reports of similar destruction emerged from Bandipora, Anantnag, and other parts of the Valley.
The Kulgam district was among the hardest-hit areas. In Modergam, a massive poplar tree fell on the house of Irshad Ahmad Ganie, damaging the roof. Other incidents included:
- Adijan – Home of Ghulam Mohammad Wani sustained damage.
- Shurat – Residence of Farooq Ahmad Kumar was impacted.
- Zangulpora – A rooftop was blown off onto the road.
- Pombay and surrounding areas – Reports of rooftop damage surfaced.
Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage, with local officials confirming widespread losses across the district.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre Srinagar had earlier forecasted light rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds of 60-70 km/h for Friday, March 28, across Kashmir and Jammu divisions.
The weather is expected to remain dry from March 29 to April 6, according to the MeT department, which has also issued an advisory urging:
✔ Travellers, tourists, and transporters to follow official safety guidelines.
✔ Farmers to resume agricultural activities after Friday.
✔ Public caution against outdoor activities, boating, or standing near weak structures and power lines.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging residents to remain vigilant until conditions stabilize.
