Ganderbal, May 2: The Sonamarg Development Authority has imposed a complete ban on the movement of ponies along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and designated footpaths in the tourist destination of Sonamarg, citing concerns over public safety and damage to infrastructure.

According to an official order issued by the Chief Executive Officer of the Sonamarg Development Authority, the decision follows multiple complaints regarding traffic congestion, accidents, and inconvenience caused to pedestrians due to unregulated pony movement along the highway stretch from Gagangeer to Baltal.

The order also refers to a communication from the Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, highlighting misuse of footpaths and roadside areas where pony movement was found to be damaging public assets and disrupting smooth traffic flow.

Authorities have directed pony owners and operators to strictly use only the notified pony tracks and keep highways and footpaths clear for vehicular and pedestrian movement. Violators will face penalties, including fines and seizure of animals under relevant legal provisions.

Officials said the matter has been taken seriously as it affects public safety, cleanliness, and the overall environment of the tourist destination, especially ahead of the peak tourist season and the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.

Local hoteliers and trade bodies have welcomed the move, stating that it will help reduce congestion and enhance the overall tourist experience. As per the new directions, pony operators have been restricted to a designated stand at Shutkadi, and any movement beyond the notified area has been strictly prohibited.

The authority has also ordered daily monitoring and enforcement, with dedicated teams deployed on the ground for regular patrolling to ensure strict compliance with the directives.(Agencies)
