Shopian and Sonamarg Record Lowest Temperatures at Minus 5.5°C as Cold Wave Sweeps Kashmir Valley

Cold wave conditions continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, with most parts of the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero minimum temperatures, officials said.

According to the data, Shopian and Sonamarg were the coldest places in the region, both recording a low of minus 5.5°C. The popular ski resort Gulmarg registered minus 5.0°C, while Pulwama recorded minus 4.9°C.

In Srinagar, the minimum temperature settled at minus 2.4°C, while the airport area recorded a lower minimum of minus 3.4°C. Other parts of south Kashmir also experienced intense cold, with Anantnag at minus 4.2°C, Pahalgam at minus 3.8°C, Qazigund at minus 3.3°C, and Awantipora at minus 3.2°C.

Kupwara and Pampore recorded identical lows of minus 3.0°C, while Budgam registered minus 3.1°C. In north Kashmir, Baramulla dropped to minus 1.9°C, Bandipora to minus 1.5°C, Sopore to minus 3.1°C, and Ganderbal to minus 0.9°C. Beerwah in Budgam recorded minus 4.1°C, while Aloosa in Bandipora registered minus 0.4°C.

In the Jammu region, temperatures were relatively milder. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 7.2°C, while Jammu Airport saw 7.4°C. However, higher-altitude areas experienced colder conditions, with Banihal at minus 2.3°C and Bhaderwah at minus 1.8°C. Samba recorded minus 0.1°C, while Udhampur and Rajouri recorded 0.6°C and 0.5°C, respectively.

The Meteorological Department has forecast that cold conditions are likely to continue over the next few days, especially in the Kashmir Valley and higher reaches of the Jammu region.     (Agencies)
