Kamal, who served as the Additional General Secretary of the National Conference, breathed his last at his residence. A medical graduate by profession, he was the younger son of Jammu and Kashmir’s founding leader Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the brother of NC president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, and the uncle of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
During his long political career spanning over five decades, Kamal held several key portfolios, including Industries and Commerce, in various National Conference-led governments. He played a significant role in strengthening the party’s organisational structure and remained one of its senior-most leaders.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the demise of his uncle, describing him as a dedicated leader and a steadfast National Conference worker whose contributions to public life and the party would always be remembered.
NC president Farooq Abdullah also mourned the loss, calling his younger brother a “pillar of strength” for the party. Leaders from across the political spectrum paid tribute to Kamal, remembering his decades of public service and contributions to Jammu and Kashmir. Details regarding his funeral and last rites are awaited. (Agencies)
