Kargil, Feb 13: Former National Conference leader and ex-Food Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon, a prominent political figure from Kargil, passed away on Friday, triggering widespread grief across political circles in Jammu and Kashmir.
His demise was announced in the Legislative Assembly by National Conference legislator Tanveer Sadiq. Soon after the announcement, members of the House expressed profound sorrow and paid rich tributes to his legacy of public and political service.
Akhoon, who hailed from Sangra village in Kargil, was regarded as a seasoned politician who represented Kargil and the Ladakh region with distinction throughout his public life. Known for his strong grassroots connect and administrative experience, he held the Food portfolio and was considered a key voice from the mountainous district during successive political phases of the erstwhile state.
Members across party lines acknowledged his contributions to public welfare and his efforts in articulating the concerns of people living in far-flung and high-altitude areas. Several legislators described him as a committed leader who remained accessible to the masses and worked to strengthen democratic institutions in the region.
The Assembly observed a solemn moment as members remembered his services and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
