Ahmedabad, October 1: Schoolchildren paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by offering prayers at his statue during a visit to Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, a day ahead of his birth anniversary.

The students gathered at the historic ashram as part of activities marking Gandhi Jayanti, observed annually on October 2. They offered prayers and paid their respects to Gandhi, whose principles of truth, non-violence and social harmony remain central to the commemorations.

The visit also provided an opportunity for the students to learn about Gandhi’s life and his association with Ahmedabad. Gandhi Ashram, also known as Sabarmati Ashram, was one of the important centres of his activities during India’s freedom movement.

Schools across the country organise programmes around Gandhi Jayanti to introduce younger generations to his teachings and contribution to India’s independence movement. The occasion is also marked through prayer meetings, cleanliness drives, cultural programmes and community activities.

The students’ visit to the ashram formed part of the preparations for the October 2 observance, when tributes are paid to Gandhi at memorials and public institutions across India.
