Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A in 2019 was the “most fitting tribute” to the sacrifice of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who dedicated his life to the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India.

In a signed article published on the occasion of Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary, the Prime Minister described him as a visionary leader whose life symbolised courage, selfless service and unwavering commitment to national unity.

Modi said Mookerjee consistently placed “India First” and worked to strengthen institutions while promoting Indian values. He recalled that Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh at a time when the Congress Party dominated Indian politics, believing the country needed an alternative voice rooted in the nation’s cultural heritage.

Highlighting Mookerjee’s role in national integration, Modi said he played a key part in ensuring West Bengal remained an integral part of India during Partition and later launched a movement against the special constitutional status granted to Jammu and Kashmir.

“He sacrificed his life for the cause he believed in, and the revocation of Articles 370 and 35A in 2019 was the most fitting tribute to his martyrdom,” the Prime Minister said.

Modi also praised Mookerjee’s contributions as India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, crediting him with laying the foundation for modern industrial development through projects such as the Damodar Valley Corporation and the Sindri Fertiliser Plant, while also supporting traditional industries, artisans and handloom workers.

The Prime Minister highlighted Mookerjee’s tenure as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta, where he introduced several reforms aimed at strengthening education and nurturing future leadership.

Recalling Mookerjee’s commitment to democratic values, Modi noted that although he initially served in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Cabinet, he resigned on matters of principle when he felt national interests required a different course.

The Prime Minister also described Mookerjee as a strong defender of free speech and democratic ideals, saying his vision continues to inspire India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation.

Modi urged the country’s youth to draw inspiration from Mookerjee’s ideals and contribute towards building a strong, united, self-reliant and compassionate India.(Agencies)
