Security Forces Intervene as Protesters Demand Regularization and Pending Wages
Police Halt Daily Wagers’ Protest March Toward CM’s Residence in Jammu
Jammu, Mar 22: Police on Friday foiled a protest march by daily wagers from the Jal Shakti Department as they attempted to reach Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s residence in Jammu, demanding regularization of their services and the release of pending wages.
Under the banner of the PHE Employees Union, hundreds of daily wagers staged a demonstration, shouting slogans like “Omar Abdullah hosh mein aao” to express their frustration over the government’s inaction on their long-standing demands. The protest was part of a 72-hour strike called by the union.
Authorities had set up barricades to prevent the march, but some protestors managed to breach them, prompting police to resort to a minor cane charge to disperse the crowd. A heavy police presence ensured that the demonstrators were stopped at Shaheedi Chowk, preventing them from advancing further.
Protest leaders criticized the National Conference government for failing to fulfill its pre-election promises regarding job regularization and wage disbursement. Despite repeated assurances, they claimed, their issues remain unaddressed, forcing them to take to the streets once again.
